Art Gallery & Creative Studios

166 Littleton Avenue | Newark, NJ

The Challenges

  • Integrating modern electrical and life-safety systems without detracting from the gallery's architectural and display elements.
  • Engineering systems that comply with dual occupancy classifications — a public Assembly (Group A-3) gallery space on the first floor and private studio lofts above.
  • Providing reliable power and ventilation for professional creative studios while maintaining a clean, gallery-ready environment on the exhibition level.

The Horizon MEP Solution

  • Designed a custom electrical and lighting plan featuring high-efficiency LED fixtures, decorative chandeliers, and pendants with dedicated circuitry for exhibit-quality illumination and professional studio equipment.
  • Engineered a comprehensive Fire Alarm System Upgrade with a non-voice general evacuation system integrated with smoke detection and fire suppression alerts for multi-level Assembly and Residential-style occupancy.
  • Developed a coordinated mechanical package including high-efficiency exhaust fans and climate control systems to maintain air quality across both gallery and studio spaces.
  • All systems were designed in strict accordance with the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) and the 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC), incorporating occupancy sensors and ASHRAE-compliant lighting controls for energy efficiency.

The Result

A fully integrated, permit-ready MEP and Fire Alarm design that transformed the property into a vibrant, safe, and functional arts destination, ensuring smooth construction and long-term operational reliability for the Newark creative community.
